1st Annual Deer Lake Strawberry Festival Walk/Run
This year marks the first walk/run held in Deer Lake, NL! As a pre-event to this year’s Deer Lake Strawberry Festival, we decided that it would be fantastic to put off a walk/run that gets people of all ages together to promote wellness and physical activity!
The 1st Annual Deer Lake Strawberry Festival Walk/Run will take place on Saturday, July 16th, 2011 in Deer Lake, NL. The event will start at the Elwood High School Parking Lot at 9:45 am. This event allows any participant to walk or run 2.5 or 5 kilometres through the town. This event will raise money for the Deer Lake Strawberry Festival and a well-known local charity! The minimum fundraising efforts by a participant is $10.00, which will also cover the cost of the event t-shirt if registered by June 16th. Registration forms will be available on the Deer Lake Strawberry Festival Facebook page, their website, at local businesses around town and at local schools and community centres. I have also attached a copy of the registration form to this email.
The deadline to register will be June 16th, 2011. If you get your form and money in by this date, you will get an event t-shirt! Registration forms along with cash or cheque (Deer Lake Strawberry Festival Walk/Run) can be mailed to 9 Reginald Drive, Deer Lake, NL, A8A 1Z9 or can be dropped off on June 16th, 2011 from 7-9 pm at the Hodder Memorial Complex Lobby.
We hope to get as many people of all ages to come out and participate in what we hope will be an annual event. There will be prizes and snacks available after the race! This is a great opportunity to motivate you and your family and friends to get active this summer!! Also, for coaches and athletes of all sports – this is a great opportunity for training and to keep fit in the on or off season!
Spread the word! Encourage friends and family to participate!

Welcome to the 28th Annual Deer Lake Strawberry Festival
This year will mark the 28th Strawberry Festival in Deer Lake. Since its very beginning it has seen a multitude of volunteers passionate about creating an event where families and visitors could gather and share in the spirit of the community. A gathering place where kids can delight in festival fun and where fireworks dancing in the sky brings out a smile no matter what your age, a place where you can eat french fries out of a cardboard box, eat cotton candy til your tummy aches…a place to reunite with family and friends.
In March of this year a new executive was elected to plan, organize and facilitate the 2011 Deer Lake Strawberry Festival being held July 22-24. We’d like to introduce you to our members and let you know about our plans to grow the spirit of your community festival.
- Chairperson, Angela Chynn - 635-3055
- Vice-Chairperson, Amanda Freake – 635-4152
- Secretary, Torena Wiseman – 635-3928
- Treasurer, Vacant
- Town Liason, Sheila Mercer – 635-2924
- Grand Lake Centre Liason, Glenda Garnier
The mission of what the festival was meant to be is still alive and well. As our planning team gathers to share ideas and create events for all ages, we truly recognize the efforts and valuable time that past volunteers have given to bring the festival together. Our team is very passionate about keeping the true meaning of the festival alive but we’re also ready to change things up a little this year. These are some of the events we’ve been busy planning:
- A performance by the Bay St. George Sharing Circle
- An Amazing Strawberry Race
- Demonstrations: Cheerleaders, Square Dancers, Gymnastics
- New Kiddies Corner activities
- 1-5 km Race (weekend before the festival)
- Strawberry Family Photo Area
- Beer Tent Dance Floor, Games & Events
- Talent Show
- Outdoor Community Sun Dance (2 weeks before the festival)
- New Strawberry Mascot
- Free events: sack races, hoola hoop contest, challenges & more
- Arts & Crafts Marketplace
- Stadium Dance with a Mardi Gras atmosphere, games, challenges, drink specials, BBQ
Musical entertainment for all age groups! Papa String, a four piece rock band that rock it out with a female lead singer and often play to a packed house will be playing on Friday night. Dave McHugh who is always a favourite and very versatile singing country, rock and Newfoundland music will also be on stage Friday night. Shacktown’s 5 piece band playing at the stadium dance Saturday night promises to have you on the dance floor until the wee hours of the morning. For the younger generation The Usual Suspects will be on stage at the field Saturday night with their hard rock entertainment sure to thrill the younger generation. What better way to close the festival on Sunday than with a stomping good time with The Catch. Their original songs and versatility to perform just about anything will have you singing along and tapping your foot for sure. Still in the booking stages and not yet announced is a variety of local talent and entertainment from our youth, gospel singers and traditional Newfoundland accordion music.
Sounds wonderful doesn’t it? We think so. And we’re having fun planning it! We’d like to share some of that fun and offer you the opportunity to get involved to host one of our many events or plan something entirely different. Challenge your co-workers, your neighbours, your staff or a community group to a race, an eating contest, a strength challenge…the list is endless. Perhaps you can spare an hour or two and volunteer your time! Together we can grow our small community festival into an event that brings together every fibre of our town. We’d love to hear from you! You can reach us at dlsf1984@hotmail.com, through facebook or by contacting any one of our festival team.
